Aging in place

What is aging-in-place bathroom remodeling?

It means updating your bathroom so it stays safe, comfortable and easy to use as your needs change, so you can keep living in the home you love. Common changes include replacing a tall tub wall with a low-threshold shower, adding a shower seat and well-placed grab bars, moving controls within easy reach, and choosing slip-resistant flooring.

The best plan depends on you: how you move, what feels difficult today, what you would like to prepare for, and the size and layout of your bathroom.

How can I make my bathroom safer as I get older?

Start with the places where you step, turn, reach or sit. For many people the biggest improvement is an easier way into the shower, such as a low-threshold or curbless entry instead of stepping over a tub wall. Grab bars where you naturally reach for support, a built-in or fold-down seat, a handheld shower on a slide bar, controls you can reach from the seat, good lighting and slip-resistant floors all help.

You do not need to do everything at once. We can help you decide what matters most now and what can wait.

When is the right time to make bathroom changes?

Many people plan ahead, while getting in and out of the tub is still manageable, so they can make choices calmly and on their own schedule. Others call after a change in health or mobility. Either is fine. Planning early simply gives you more choice.

My parent needs a safer bathroom. How should we start?

Begin with a conversation, not a sales appointment. Ask what feels difficult or tiring in the bathroom, and what they would like to keep the same. Your parent should be part of every decision about their own home.

When you are ready, you can request a consultation on their behalf, and we will make sure the homeowner is included in the visit.

Bathroom safety

Where should grab bars go?

Usually near the shower or tub entry, on the long wall inside the shower, and beside the toilet. The right height and position depend on how you move and on which hand you prefer to use. Grab bars must be anchored into framing or with anchors rated for the purpose. A towel bar is not a grab bar.

Can grab bars be installed where there are no studs?

Often, yes, using anchors designed and rated for grab bars, or by adding blocking inside the wall during a remodel. We check the wall before recommending a location.

Do you offer slip-resistant flooring?

We can recommend shower floors and bathroom flooring with better slip resistance, such as textured shower bases and smaller tiles with more grout lines. The right choice depends on the rest of your project, and we will show you the options.

Walk-in showers

What is the difference between a low-threshold and a curbless shower?

A low-threshold shower has a small lip, typically a few inches high, that is much easier to step over than a tub wall. A curbless (zero-threshold) shower has no lip at all, so you can roll or walk straight in. Curbless showers need the floor to slope toward the drain, which on a concrete slab can mean extra work. We will tell you which is practical in your bathroom.

Can you add a seat or bench to a shower?

Yes. Options include built-in benches, corner seats and fold-down seats that stay out of the way when you do not need them. We help you choose a size and height that are comfortable to sit on and to get up from.

Are walk-in showers hard to keep clean?

They are usually easier to clean than a tub. Smooth wall panels or large-format tile mean fewer grout lines, and a handheld shower makes rinsing simple. We will explain the care each material needs before you choose.

Bathtub conversions

Can I replace my bathtub with a walk-in shower?

In most bathrooms, yes. A standard tub space is often converted into a shower with a low step-in or, where the floor and drain allow, a curbless entry. During the consultation we look at the space, the plumbing and your floor (most Houston homes are on a concrete slab) and explain which options will work in your bathroom.

If yours is the only tub in the house, it is worth thinking about who else uses it, such as young grandchildren. We are happy to talk that through with you.

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?

It depends on the scope. Many straightforward replacements that fit the existing tub space can be installed very quickly once materials arrive, while projects that move plumbing, change the floor for a curbless entry or include tile work take longer. We give you a written timeline for your project before you decide.

Will removing my tub hurt my home’s resale value?

Opinions differ, and it can depend on your neighborhood and on whether another tub remains in the house. Many buyers value an easy-access shower. If resale is important to you, we are glad to talk through the trade-offs.

Walk-in tubs

Is a walk-in shower or a walk-in tub better?

Neither is better for everyone. A walk-in tub suits people who love to soak and can manage the door and the wait while it fills and drains. A walk-in shower is usually quicker to use, takes less space and can work with a wheelchair or a transfer bench. We will help you weigh it up based on how you move and what you enjoy.

Does Medicare pay for walk-in tubs?

Walk-in tubs are generally not on Medicare’s list of covered medical equipment. Coverage rules change and other plans differ, so please check directly with Medicare or your plan.

Accessibility

What bathroom modifications help people with limited mobility?

The most useful changes usually are: a shower with little or no step to get in, enough clear floor space to turn around (with a walker or wheelchair if needed), a sturdy seat, grab bars placed for how you actually move, a handheld shower, lever-style controls within reach of the seat, a comfortable-height toilet, and slip-resistant flooring.

Every person and every bathroom is different, so we ask about what is hard today rather than suggesting a one-size-fits-all package.

Can an accessible bathroom still look modern and luxurious?

Yes. Today’s grab bars come in finishes that match your faucets and can double as towel bars. Curbless showers with linear drains look clean and contemporary. Built-in benches, stone-look wall panels, frameless glass and thoughtful lighting are features people choose for style, and they happen to make a bathroom easier to use.

Will my new bathroom be “ADA compliant”?

The ADA Standards apply to public and commercial buildings, not to private homes. In a home, the goal is a bathroom that works for the people who live there. We use widely recognized accessibility guidance as a starting point and adapt it to your needs and your space, and we will be clear about what your bathroom can and cannot accommodate.

Can you make a bathroom wheelchair accessible?

Often, yes, but it depends on the room. Wheelchair access usually needs a curbless shower, enough clear floor space to turn, and sometimes a wider doorway. We measure carefully and tell you honestly what is possible in your bathroom.

Veterans

Does Houston Shower & Bath serve veterans?

Yes. We work with veterans and their families across the Houston area on walk-in showers, tub-to-shower conversions, grab bars, seating and other accessibility changes.

Houston Shower & Bath is an independent remodeling company. We are not part of, or endorsed by, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Does the VA help pay for bathroom modifications?

Some veterans qualify for VA grants that can help pay for home changes, such as the HISA grant (through VA health care) or the SAH and SHA housing grants. Eligibility depends on your service-connected disability and other requirements, and the VA decides who qualifies. Not every veteran is eligible.

The veteran applies directly to the VA. For current rules, visit VA.gov or talk with your VA care team. If you are applying, we can provide the written, itemized estimate that applications usually require.

Is there a “veterans bathroom remodel program”?

Be cautious with ads that promise a special government bathroom program for all veterans. The VA’s home-modification grants have specific eligibility rules and are applied for through the VA itself. Check any offer against VA.gov.

Project costs

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Houston?

It depends on the size of the shower, the type of entry (low-threshold or curbless), wall and floor materials, glass, seating, fixtures and any plumbing or floor changes. Because every bathroom is different, we do not quote a price without seeing the space. After the consultation you receive a written, itemized proposal so you can see exactly what is included.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. The in-home consultation and your written proposal are free, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Do you offer financing?

Financing is available for qualified homeowners. Approval and terms depend on the lender, so ask us during your consultation and we will explain the options before you decide anything.

Is a bathroom accessibility remodel tax deductible?

Some medically necessary home improvements can be deductible, but it depends on your situation. Please ask a tax professional before relying on any deduction.

Installation & scheduling

How do I get started with a bathroom accessibility consultation?

Call us at (346) 585-2284 or send the short form on our contact page. We will call you back to find a convenient time for a free in-home consultation. A family member can make the request for you, and they are welcome to join the visit.

What happens at the consultation?

We listen first: how you use the bathroom, what is difficult, and what you would like it to look like. Then we measure, look at the plumbing and floor, show you options and materials, and answer your questions. Family members are welcome. You will not be pressured to sign anything that day.

Can I keep using my home during the work?

Yes. We protect floors and furniture along the work path, keep the work area tidy and clean up each day. If the bathroom being remodeled is your only shower, we will plan the schedule with you in advance.

Materials

What materials do you use for shower walls?

We offer durable, easy-clean wall systems in a range of colors and patterns, including stone- and tile-look designs, along with shower bases, glass doors, fixtures and accessories. We bring samples to the consultation so you can see and feel them in your own light.

Warranties

What warranty do you offer?

Our installation work is backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty. Products also carry their manufacturers’ warranties. You receive the warranty terms in writing with your proposal, so please read them for exactly what is covered.

Service areas

What areas do you serve?

We serve Houston and many surrounding communities, including Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, The Woodlands, Spring, Kingwood, Humble, Pearland, Friendswood, League City and Pasadena. See our Service Areas page for the full list, or call us if you are not sure.
